How dangerous are cows?
Cows might seem cute and cuddly. But that's maybe what they want you to think. The truth is that they are responsable for more casualities than sharks. This videoput cows at number four of the deadliest animals in USA. No wonder lots of people are affraid of them.
The top cause of death is reported as kicks or trampling, but also crushing and head butting were among the reported injuries.
But according to this british studie, you don't have to worry too much if you are not handeling cattle on a daily basis. Most injuries occur when handeling cattle on a daily abasis, such as dairy and beef farmers, vets and abattoir workers.
But can you avoid to be fataly injured?
There are certain situation where the cow/bull is extra sensetive and can attack. Some of those are...
- Maternal behaviour - Like all mothers, the basic instinct of a cow is to protect their children. Many incidents occur when farmers are ear-tagging the calves and the cow feels that the calf is in danger.
- Fear of dogs - A study of vigilance to measure fear in dairy cattle concluded that dogs were even more threatening than unfamiliar humans, resembling potential predators, and cattle were exceptionally vigilant in novel locations.
- Media - The study linked above have studied 1000 reported cases, where 100 were relevant and of those 100, 11 were duplicates. Like with everything, media has a tendency to over react.
So how should I react around cows?
As the studies show, avoid approaching a cow while walking your dog and be leave them around when they have a newborn. In other words, use your common sense and you'll be fine.
